Review: Pilot Cavalier Fountain Pen

I’d like to introduce you to a favorite fountain pen of mine. It’s not THE favorite, but a favorite, nonetheless.

Cavalier Fountain Pen

I pull this pen out when I want to write with something that is both lightweight and offers a bit of precision.

This pen has a fine nib and I really love the way it writes. The nib has just a slight flex and it writes beautifully with my Diamine inks. Diamine’s Monaco Red is my favorite ink to use in this pen because it matches the barrel (of course!) but also because the edges of the lines end up with a slightly higher concentration of ink producing some beautiful shading.

The cap posts gently on the barrel (with a satisfying ‘click’ noise) and the entire pen is of sturdy construction. It is definitely a metal body….aluminum?

The lines this puppy lays down are always smooth and I’ve never had an issue with it skipping. I’ve also had it sitting around, completely filled, only to pick it up weeks later: it writes on the first try with no issue.

You’ll see I purchased the converter with this pen. It slips on snugly and I’ve never had an issue with leaking. The converter is a plate press—you squeeze a metal strip housed within the converter and release it when you want to fill it. It’s easy.

I ordered this pen from JetPens back in August of 2010. I’ve run a lot of ink through this baby!

PS: Hat tip to Ron for requesting this review. You gave me the motivation I needed to finish this post!

  1. Good review. I wanted to buy this at some point but I decided against it. I have a Pilot Prera with an M nib which is very fine so I’m guessing the F is even finer. I’m starting to move away from such fine nibs. Oh, that ink is gorgeous.

    • The Prera is on my wishlist at the moment–and I’d say the F on this Cavalier is like an EF or EEF on other models.
Thanks for your comment and for visiting Simplicity Embellished!

  2. Hey, Cole. I like your Pilot. I’ve held off buying a red pen despite wanting one more than I want a BMW, because I haven’t come across one that made me NEED it. I think this one does it. I’m liking that ink, too.

Thanks for the review. Now I’m going to see if I can find one.

    Cheers n gears!

    This Limner

    • Hi Limner! I really love this Cavalier. It is SUCH a lovely pen to write with. I bought mine from JetPens but I’m sure it’s available elsewhere too. See you in the mail!

  3. Thanks Cole,

I use a Pilot 78g in “Teal” with a fine nib it is one of my favorite pens, the tiny nib is so smooth. It seems all Pilot nibs are.____ The Review was very informative.

    • Ron, I think overall, Pilot might be my favorite when it comes to thin, smooth nibs. Plus, they are lightweight without being plastic, which I love.

  4. Hi Cole, thank you very much for your very informative post. I just got mine today in PINK! and it’s definitely beautiful, HOWEVER, and although I like the very fine clean writing it produces, the ink doesn’t seem to flow fast enough making me write very slowly if I want to see the complete “letters”. If I write at a normal pace, it feels scratchy and is very light and faint in areas, as if it has run out of ink. I too am using the CON-20 converter, and as you can only push it the once to fill, I can’t really tell if it has filled up quite that much. Can you give me any suggestions? I’m using the J. HERBIN Rouille d’Ancre ink which is just beautiful. I don’t think the ink is the problem as I tried it in my Tasche by OHTO, by refilling a catridge and it works superbly and is so yummy I’d like to lick the page BUT I WON’T!!! My Tasche is medium point, the Cavalier is fine, could it be that I’m just not used to it? But even so, it makes me write so SLOWLY… Bought both from Jet Pens also, lovely service. Hope you can help me out, Kind regards

    • Hi Conchita!
Love the pink too! I am betting you need to get a few miles on the Cavalier….write with it a bunch and give it some time to ‘break in.’
      Other possible issues:
      1. Your converter isn’t in right
      2. The paper you are using is causing problems.
I hope this helps! And Thanks for reading Simplicity Embellished!

      • Hi Cole,
Thanks so much for replying to my problem. You’re absolutely right!!! I have patiently gone the extra mile and the more I use it the smoother it writes. I haven’t yet tried it again with the converter, I’m using a cartridge which I refill using a syringe and needle. I think that soon I’ll give the converter another chance. I must admit, it looks very chic and elegant, I feel taller when I write with it LOL!!!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful web page with us all. All the best, your fan from Spain!
