I had the pleasure of a Tuesday afternoon date with my husband, Victor, at the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati, Ohio last week. The annual Butterfly Show was taking place and I was able to grab a few snapshots; some of which I’m very proud of.
I thought I’d share as you bear with me while I prepare for a big ol’ update to Simplicity Embellished.
The white and black guy sports a torn wing and a crinkle in a lower span as well, but isn’t he lovely?
The one below is my favorite. This little one was just sitting on the banister (it is sadly possible that he was nearing the end of his life) and I was able to get in very close. I feel like he’s thinking of something in this photo. I feel like there’s a lot more going on under those wings than above, and I feel like I’m seeing some intimate moment that I’m not supposed to.
I can’t help but think when I look at these butterflies, that without the wings, I would be terrified. If a bug that large came at me, well, it would not result in me leaning in for a closer shot.
The orange fellow below was a delight. I felt like we were making eye contact.
This is a dreamy shot too. You can see the fur, the spines on the leg and the twitch of the antenna. If you look close, you’ll see he’s got what looks like a little pig nose.
This reminds me of some very nice paper I own. Look at those wings. If I didn’t see that it was a butterfly, I would assume that it was some beautiful card stock worked into a beautiful, flowing stack.
Where else do you see orange like that other than on a jack-o-lantern or tiger lily? Not too often, I suppose. Orange is lovely.

Hello! My name is Cole. Simplicity Embellished is my special place. I talk a lot about writing letters, etegami, gardening and yoga. Please sign up for Sunday Tea (comes to you via email), subscribe using your feed reader of choice and don't hesitate to say hello on Twitter or Facebook either.

Lovely, lovely pictures. Thanks for sharing !!
Just curious: what kind of camera do you use?
Hi Hope!
I actually use a few cameras. I most use a Canon PowerShot SD870 IS for macro shots–it does wonderful macro photography.
For non-macro stuff, I usually use a Nikon D40.
Then, I use my iPhone 3GS (soon to be 4!) for other odds and ends.
Cool — I just bought a Nikon D90 a couple of months ago (mainly because I have a rather mobile toddler who is usually out of the frame after I’ve pressed the shutter button on a point-and-shoot). I have a macro lens – among others – and I’m still learning/experimenting with bugs, flowers, and — last but not least — fountain pen nibs :).
Thanks for sharing your pics — looking forward to seeing more.
Oh nice! My husband has his eye on upgrading to a D90 and purchasing two additional lenses- a macro lense and I can’t recall the other one.
One of my favorite things to photographs are my fountain pen nibs. They look awesome when you’re able to capture them just right. You should also look at http://www.thepioneerwoman.com for photography-related tutorials and stuff. When I first began to seriously consider photography, I found a lot of useful info there. I’ve been following PW for about 6 months now — I like that the info comes in digestible bits. I work full-time in the corporate world which leaves less time for dabbling and hobbies so her posts are very handy!
Nice! You probably know more photography resources than I do! ;)
Thanks for your comments Hope!
