A couple days ago I stopped over at my Mom + Dad’s house. After a nice dinner my Mom popped this little guy into my hand.
It belonged to my mom when she was 12 or 13. Apparently, it was all the rage to seal your letters with some red sealing wax and send them off when she was a kid.
What’s funny is where she found this.
She told me it was stashed in one of the drawers in the bathroom. No idea how it got there, or for how long its been there either.
It’s funny that a treasure like this moved with my Mom from her childhood home, to her first apartment, to her second, to my parent’s first apartment together, then their first house and now where they live today.
I used this seal last night on a couple letters that went out this morning and it gave me goosebumps. I love knowing that the last time it was in commission was when my Mom was younger than I am now.
Well, I thought I’d share this little story with you. Do any of you have unique stories behind your seals?

This is a great story! And how cool that of all the places it could have been hiding, it was in the bathroom!!!
Not so much of a unique story, but years ago (probably nearly 11 years now) my husband (then boyfriend) bought me a beautiful Stuart Houghton calligraphy pen set, a set of calligraphy inks and a personal wax seal with my initial and a set of other seals. I found all but the seal selection (the initialled one was there) the other day and this has just reminded me I need to start using them again, as well as expand my selection of seals as I’d always intended to do. I’d love to think that someday, when my kids are older, that they’ll find and use them, and that they’ll know that some of them were bought for me by their Dad.
I love it.
Tell me, what seals do you have besides your initial?
I have an anchor, fleur de lis and a fish (besides the one pictured above).
I have (buried somewhere) a cat silhouette (which I really wish I could find because it looked beautiful when used) and a moon and stars. The cat one was a silhouette of the rear of a cat sitting upright with its tail curled out to the left, and I really loved it. I do hope they haven’t been lost in our house move (although I will search for a new one if they have – I am yet to find them)
Ooo! The cat seal sounds awesome. I would LOVE one like that.
I think I’ve stumbled on something else to start collecting…….my poor, poor husband. ;)
What a great story. I used to do wax sealing but I have no idea where mine went. There are so many things, like sealing wax, that I’d like to start doing that it can be a bit overwhelming!
that is fantastic. i honestly thought that only royalty or people in fairy tales still used such lovely things as these! (oh course i know better-but the child in me has that in her mind…) and that your mom found it in a bathroom drawer is fantastic! though i am sitting in my room alone except for my house rabbit : ) i read this and said an audible “awww”
Hi.
My love for and adoration of paper has revived my love for letterwriting only recently. And I have a searched for and found a seal with my first initial. I’ve got this as a present about 16 years ago and I have used in the past.
Now I will use it again once I have found the right stationary where it fits onto.
Hey Marcus! Thanks for stopping by!
You should post a photo of your seal on your blog–would love to see it!
